Hallo Beathe,
The Name of "Jesus"
The Greek for the Name of "Jesus" is not Jesus (GEE-zus), but closer to Iesus or Yesus. Since He Himself was born a "Jew" (a Yahdai), and since in His day in (Y)Israyl they spoke primarily Aramaic or Hebrew, His given Name is closer to Yahshua (or Yahshu, Yahsha, Yahashua, etc.). This Name means something, as many names during that period did, as the Scriptures say, "You should call His Name 'Yahshua' (Yah saves), for He will save His People from their sins." (Matt1:21)
"Hallowed be Thy Name"
"Yah" comes from the Name of the Creator. We are most familiar with Hallelujah or Hallelu-Yah. Some suggest that "Yah" is an abbreviation for the complete "Proper" Name of the Creator.
The next part, "shua," "ashua", or "oshua" (or however the correct way to write it goes) apparently comes from another word. I've read various suggestions for that other word: Hosea or Oshea being prominent. That part of the His Name apparently means something related to saving. "For He will save His People from their sins."
Matt 1:21
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS [Yahshua - Yah saves/is salvation]*: for he shall save his people from their sins.(KJV)
* The Greek interlinear has Ieesoón here (said to be a form of Iesous; many names end in s in the Greek manuscripts; I therefore believe the s should be dropped). This is exactly or approximately "Yahshua" in Aramaic/Hebrew, said to be the language(s) His mother, He, and the Apostles spoke.
And Makátal said: Verily, the Jews appointed a man to keep guard over Jesus, and to go wherever He went; and when Jesus went up a mountain, an angel came and lifted Him up to heaven. Then God made the man who watched Him resemble Jesus, and the Jews thought that it was Jesus; so they took him. And he kept on saying, "I am not Jesus; I am So and So, the son of So and So;" but they would not believe him, and they killed and crucified him. Katada said: It has been related that the Prophet of God, Jesus, said to His companions, "Which of you is willing to take my form, and he will be killed." Then a man of the crowd said, "I, O Prophet of God." So he was killed, and God prevented them from killing Jesus and lifted Him up to Himself. And it is said that the man who resembled Jesus and was crucified in His place was an Israelite called Ashua (this is the common form of Joshua, or Jesus), the son of Kandir. And God knows best.
Stefan
